Website Grader is a tool that helps measure the effectiveness of a website, from a marketing perspective. It assigns a numerical score from (a “grade”) to a given website. The score ranges from 0-100 (technically, 0-99 as 100 is not possible). It is based on a variety of data points about the website including the structure of the site, popularity, traffic, search engine optimization, marketing features and a slew of other things.

The grade itself is calculated as a percentile score. So, if a given site gets a score of 60, this means it is more effective than 60% of the other sites that have been graded. As of this writing, while the software is in beta testing, over 6,000 websites have been submitted to the tool by users.

The algorithm is designed such that individual variables are also measured on a relative basis. For example, one of the items we check for is the presence of a properly structured and discoverable RSS feed. If a given site does not have an RSS feed, but not many other sites do either, than the impact on the final score is not that high. But, if most other sites have a discoverable RSS feed, than the final relative score is more significantly impacted. This relative ranking mechanism allows the tool to auto-adjust as the industry itself changes and more websites adopt “best practices”.

If you have not done so already, please subscribe to the RSS feed for this blog. As we update the software, we’ll post periodic articles to the blog. We are currently enhancing the software very frequently (updates are posted about once every week or so).

If you have ideas for how the tool might be improved, we’d love to hear from you. Please send an email to feedback [at] websitegrader.com or leave a comment. We’d love to hear from you.
