Social bookmarking involves posting a link back to your web page or blog post from a social bookmarking website which stores the link. You enter keywords (called Tags) which categorize your bookmark and allow others to search, view and vote for your bookmark. There is benefit to this on several levels:

  • 1. First you get some direct traffic from people clicking on your bookmark and going directly to your web page. This is usually won’t be a huge amount of traffic in most cases, but is is very targeted. Also every once in a while you get a site that will take off and become very popular from this alone.
  • 2. The next benefit is an increased potential for fast search engine indexing. When you post your bookmark to a bookmarking site, it will be displayed on the front page. Now these pages are usually a very high PR, ranging from PR5 to PR7 or PR8!

What this means is that Googlebot and other search engine spiders visit this page hundreds of times each day. When they visit and find your links there they will check out your site immediately.

Think about this: Google is finding your page from a link on a very high PR site. This is the "best scenario" for getting a good search engine ranking.

The Darkside of Social Bookmarking

By now I’m sure you are thinking social bookmarking is just what you’ve been looking for, but like all things, this has it’s problems:

-  PROBLEM 1: IT’S TOO TIME CONSUMING - In order to be effective, you have to have have accounts at several bookmarking sites. This means manually logging into each site to post a link to your site. If you have many, many web pages to bookmark (and of course you do), then the task becomes incredibly difficult and tedious.

-  PROBLEM 2: PEOPLE ARE MISUSING THE TECHNIQUES - Overall Social Bookmarking is a great strategy, however there are some people who don’t care to use in a manner that is beneficial for everyone. They use it as a way to SPAM thousands of their junk pages and affiliate sites.

This is where "Black Hat" tools and techniques excel. Black hat methods basically boil down to ways of generating more search engine traffic. Lots of it.

Most of these methods are not well know or understood by the general internet community. However, there are a few method that are know by everyone and these are what gives black at marketing such a bad name. Search Engine Spam, Blog Comment Spam and Page Cloaking are some of the more popular (and hated) techniques.

I do not believe that all black hat techniques are bad. In fact, we can learn something from "blackhatters". Most things they do involves automation. Basically this involves performing tasks on a very large scale.

If they are going to create a cloaked website, they will not just create one, they will create thousands. All at the click of a button. They understand that the real key to generating substantial search engine traffic is volume.

With that in mind, let’s discuss how can we improve Social Bookmarking to make it more effective on a larger scale?

In recent months there have been several potential solutions to improve social bookmarking speed and effectiveness, but in my opinion they fail to address the two main problems above:

- 1. They do not make it much easier to post to bookmarking sites. The software currently available requires too much manual intervention. You have to enter URLS, enter data for each URL, select where to post the URLS, etc. It’s just too much to do, and too time consuming if you have hundreds of sites and pages to post.
- 2. Some are charging you each month. I don’t know the reason for this other than to get more money from you, but I do not see any benefit to paying $20 - $60 a month for a software application that bookmarks my sites. It just doesn’t make sense.
- 3. They do not separate your activity from spammers. This is a biggie. All bookmarking software out today just posts all of your web pages at once! Or worse they post the same page to multiple accounts that you have.

They have no moderation or randomization! Think about this for a second. If you have thousands of web pages to post, how does it look when these applications log into your bookmarking account and just dump all of your URLS at once? I don’t know about you, but that sure looks like SPAM to me!

Some software will wait a few minutes between posts, but it doesn’t matter. Even if it’s good content, adding 500 URLS to one bookmarking account in a day is just NOT normal behavior and you will eventually be banned by the bookmarking site.
